Michael Dell: Introvert

One of the difficult things for co-workers to deal with is that most technology people are introverts. One only has to look at where the biggest love/hate relationships exist within a company to confirm that. Marketing/sales and tech are notoriously unable to connect. Marketing/sales is usually filled with over-the-top extroverts who can’t understand the basic functional mentality of the introvert. It doesn’t mean that one is better than the other, only that they operate at different wavelengths.
This article over at Business Pundit discusses a Business Week article about Michael Dell who is an introvert. Many of those under Dell thought him to be impersonal and emotionally detached which is something very common with introverts. It’s an excellent read and even more interesting are the comments by Business Pundit’s readers. As Jim Moran mentions in his comments; many introverts can speak to large groups or socialize but it is very demanding both physically and mentally. As a functioning introvert myself I know that I feel completely spent after any sort of networking mixer. I am drained to the core.
The Atlantic ran an article back in March of this year which had a huge impact on me. Titled, Caring For Your Introvert the article discusses how introverts see the world and explains why they act the way that they do. It’s an interesting read for both introverts who may find themselves being described in the articles as well as extroverts who can’t seem to connect with the introverts in their work or personal life.

Meghan Wier added these pithy words on Jul 19 05 at 12:31 amHi Bill - I loved this post, and thanks for the links… I too am an introvert, and a huge advocate of business networking. Long story, but this is one of my favorite topics, thanks for sharing…
Dean Martin added these pithy words on Aug 17 06 at 11:01 amYes, introvert. I happen to be a suicidal introvert. The whole notion of misery loves company never appealed to me. But, thinking about it, you never see Mike Dell anywhere. Ever. Even with the exploding batteries I don’t think we’ll see him!
