Ever since I wrote a short white paper on how merchants can protect themselves from online credit card fraud I’ve been getting 2 or 3 emails a week from people who have been ripped off and want to find out what their options are. Unfortunatey, in most cases, there’s absolutely nothing they can do.
I had one merchant who had sold someone in Indonesia $35,000 worth of diamonds only to find out the card was stolen. The sad part was that as he described how it happened nearly every single sentence in his email contained a red flag warning that the order might be a potential fraud. But like many merchants that started out in the brick and mortar world and then opened up an online channel he did not understand that the credit card company rules change when you go online. Merchants lose many of the fraud protections that they enjoy in the brick and mortar world and so they are less diligent about applying anti-fraud techniques.
The reason for the post is that I ran across this article in the Anchorage Daily News which perfectly matches how many online merchants get ripped off. Don’t be the next victim. If you’re doing business online you need to educate yourself.

Hi, my name is Bill Rini and this is my poker blog. I've been blogging about poker and the poker industry since around 2003-ish. Like most people I started out playing poker as entertainment in home games whenever we wanted to sit around and smoke cigars, drink beer, and eat pizza, and needed a good excuse. I started playing online shortly after the first online card rooms opened and it wasn't long before I was playing 20, 30, or even 40 hours a week or more. One day I received a phone call about a program manager position at Tiltware which was the company that consulted to Full Tilt Poker on software development and marketing. After Tiltware I spent about 2.5 years working at Party Poker where I was the poker room manager.
