I know a lot of people hate chat at the tables. I enjoy it. I think it helps break up the boredom of the game and you can have some interesting conversations with people. Mind you, I’m not talking about trash talking or that sort of thing rather when the table is friendly and people are swapping enjoyable conversation.
Here’s a couple of my favorite exchanges from the last few nights:
I forget the exact hand but I had something like JT in LP and the flop came Q9x. I decide to test the waters out and bet with three opponents. The guy to my right raises and knocks out the third player. I call and the turn is an 8 giving me my straight. I check-call and the river is a K improving my straight even further. I check, he bets and I raise. He calls and I show him the straight and he types:
How the hell could you call my raise?
I respond:
Because you’re a loose raiser and you bluff A LOT!
There’s a long pause and he types back:
You’re right. LOL.
Second table chatter is from last night. I normally play pretty tight and won’t play many hands to a raise in the BB. I just hate playing a mediocre hand in bad position so if it’s close I’ll lean towards laying it down even when I suspect a total bluff at the blinds.
I’ve got AA in the BB and everyone folds to the button who raises. SB folds and I re-raise. He calls. Flop is ace high and I check. He bets and I raise. He folds and I show the pocket aces and type in the message window:
You really picked the wrong time to steal.
He responds:
Duh! Ya’ think?

The Lighter Side of Poker

Hi, my name is Bill Rini and this is my poker blog. I've been blogging about poker and the poker industry since around 2003-ish. Like most people I started out playing poker as entertainment in home games whenever we wanted to sit around and smoke cigars, drink beer, and eat pizza, and needed a good excuse. I started playing online shortly after the first online card rooms opened and it wasn't long before I was playing 20, 30, or even 40 hours a week or more. One day I received a phone call about a program manager position at Tiltware which was the company that consulted to Full Tilt Poker on software development and marketing. After Tiltware I spent about 2.5 years working at Party Poker where I was the poker room manager.
