This argument assumes the gov't would get involved in gambling regulation for safety reasons. I don't agree with this assumption. If the gov't gets more involved with online poker, it will be to enforce some kind of morality that the current administration seems keen on legislating. All the self-regulation in the world won't combat an attack from that angle.

Actually, I don't think the government would get involved for safety reasons. As far as I know there is very little risk of decompression sickness (the bends) from playing poker though I haven't read all of the medical research on that so I could be mistaken.

Though this isn't common knowledge but the NASD who licenses all brokers and brokerage houses isn't a government entity. The NASD as well as the NYSE are self-governing bodies allowed to police themselves by the SEC. While some of the stuff that has gone on in the financial markets might lead one to dismiss regulation, the reason I used the scuba industry was to show how well it can work.
