I play poker with my friends once a week. I really enjoy the game, just like I enjoy soccer, basketball or football. I’m not addicted to gambling. It’s just a game I love and I’m good at. Sometimes we bet money and sometimes we don’t. But my mom and I have had several conversations about this and she’s uncomfortable with my gambling. Is it wrong to play poker at all?

…Christian pitchers don’t telegraph what they are sending down home plate to the batter…

…Chess players don’t tell you not to make a move that allows them to take your queen…

Almost every game to be played as an amateur (some cases pro too)require an entry fee whether its for the weekend tournie or yearly fee…not unlike small limit holdem.

I love poker and used to play it PT for work.

God has shown me that it was not the best way to bring an income in and now my intent is different in why I play.

Its a game of skill that allows me to battle mentally against other players…not pray I win against the house!

God Bless.

As a Christian who does enjoy reading the bible and living the life of faith no where does it say that “games” are sinful…gambling however is.

The skill required in poker in being able to play against other “players” just as one would play chess, sports etc. allows poker to be allowed.

It is not a true direct game of chance like most casino games.

In every sport and like wise in chess, deception and strategy is used to make other players think your doing something while you do the opposite.

Also the “intent” behind the play is also going to reflect whether a player is sinning.

If you play it as the game of skill/strategy that it is and give yourself boundaries in terms of bankroll then one is playing a game.

When your intent is malicious and you gamble rather than strategize and pilfer your savings and miss work etc. than you are gambling in every sense.

I am working on my Pastoralship and this has been brought up amongst others in my peer group.

Most of us have the same thought but again just as everything “man” says is ok, it does not mean God says it is.

Let God be your guide and judge only yourself.

God Bless

Thank you Jessica for shedding some light on the issue. Unfortunately, your understanding of the Bible seems to be lacking.

Jesus threw money changers out of the temple. His beef was that they had turned a house of worship into one of commerce. Now, he obivously wasn’t against commerce in and of itself but he was against people profiting in the temple.

So your point would only be valid if, say, they wanted to open a casino in the Vatican or some other house of worship. Perhaps putting some slot machines in the pews or something like that.

Yes, if you’re a Christian and try to profess the teachings of Christ, you should not contradict what you believe in like refraining from gambling and all that betting stuff. Remember how Jesus drove away those people in the temple who were like gambling or selling their livestocks there?

So while it is still early and you’re not addicted yet, stop this habit. It’s not good for your name being a Christian. God will not like that also. Having fun is not bad, but if it’s because of something illegal, it becomes a sin.

I happen to be a Christian who loves to play poker. I am sure that I am in the minority amonst my friends at church, but I am not letting that stop me. I do not see cards or poker as inherantly evil, but anyhting to excess is bad. I play in the Amatuer Poker League (APL) a couple times a month and on-line a couple times a week. I do not have a gambling problem but I am aware that it can be a concern. The APL is FREE and most of the time I play free online. I did deposit $25 almost a year ago at Paradise Poke and I am still playing off that “bankroll” I see poker as entertainment and it consumes less of our budget than my wife spends on scrapbooking.
