Most of the time I would have agreed with the comments. My particular quest has to do with starting from $0 and growing a bank account not a bankroll. So far in just under two weeks I have gone from $0.00 to $500 using freeroll tournaments and bonuses. I look forward to seeing some comments in my blog from you guys. I am now at the move to $1000 in the next two weeks. That will give me some real capital to continue my quest.

Multi-tabling may clear bonus quickly but you can’t read players/put them on a hand when you have forty or more to read. Strictly playing percentages/premium hands over the long run makes your game easy to read and reduces the amount of value you can extract from a hand. It also causes you to lose more when you get drawn on. Chasing bonus in a loose fish pool will build a big roll fairly fast but don’t kid yourself you can play poker or put a move on a man. When the bonus clears your back to fish grinding at 2bb/100. At 1/2 limits 60h/hr four tabling you’ll earn $4.80 /hr

I think the flaw is being results oriented in the short term, and thus making plays that are unsound in the long run. But in the long run you have to be results oriented, otherwise it will just be gambling.

I play 1/2 limit and I bonuswhore like crazy. I play for money not to brag about me playing high limits. I make MUCH MUCH more money than my friends that play 0.5/1 NL and they grind like fools.

You suck at math by the way. Bonuswhores are realistic. They realize that they aren’t the best poker players in the world like you (and like every “real” poker player in the world) seems to think.

If I want to brag about how good I am at poker I play 3/6 limit. If I want to earn money I bonuswhore at 1/2 limit.

By the way, I enjoy poker. I don’t work.

I don’t advicate bonus whoring. Let’s face it your time is better spent working on something productive. If you play poker for a bit of fun then why not take the bonus (it’s an incentive to deposit).

Anyways, I’m all for learning to play poker properly and make money that way. Bonus hunting just is to time consuming. Plus you need to add in the time it takes to open accounts etc.

Well since you did bring it up, how were you making $30/hr? While you complain about my math, you failed to show yours alltogether. But hey. you’re some random guy commenting on a blog so I should believe you, right?

As I’ve always said, I don’t think it’s impossible for bonus whoring to be +EV. What I’m saying is that it may be -EV compared to other options.

The fact that BonusWhores would even define bonus whoring as “free money” is evidence of the fact that they fail to grasp some very basic economic fundamentals. And, I have read (and continue to read) the message boards over there and while I didn’t make a blanket statement about *every* bonus whore, I can say that there are enough bonus whores who are simply chasing dollars regardless of the EV that it’s an important issue to address.

I have since moved beyond poker bonus whoring, but you are way off in your math. Your ‘experiment’ is very poorly designed and is more like you just thinking about it and working some math out, which, suprise surprise, got you the answer you expected to get. When I did this I made a tad over $30/hr. That’s extremely good considering I was in college, there was no commute, I could play from the comfort of my home, and I was learning a useful skill, all contra being a grociery bagger or paper delivery boy (or part-time cocktail waitress). It was very much +EV, and to suggest that the people over at bonuswhores don’t consider EV is laughable at best.

there’s good and bad in everything. i don’t think grinding out the dollar/deuce tables for bonuses should replace anyone’s actual job. but, the extra cash from the rooms can be used to keep the hole in your game from being a hole in your wallet while spend time learning that the way they play it at the WPT final tables is not the real world.

“Plus, if a bonus whore is a break even player at low limits, they are learning the game, right?” – that’s what i’m thinking. until they are no longer surprised that someone might have hit a set of on the flop (OMG – that site is rigged! can you believe it, i flopped TWO pair, and STILL lost!) they need to see hands, lots of hands.

is grinding good for your no limit game? well, that is a conversation.
