Preliminary WPBT Next Event Tallies – Finalist Voting

by Bill Rini on June 15, 2005

Ok, since there was no real way to get an accurate count with so many people saying things like “X would be cool but Y would work too,” I tried just count every place that got a positive mention as a vote. As of 11:51pm PDT on 6.14.05, we have the following tallies:

arrow 3 Preliminary WPBT Next Event Tallies Finalist Voting

New Orleans: 11 votes
Tunica: 8 votes
Minneapolis: 1 vote (shocker)
Los Angeles: 1 vote
Atlantic City: 5 votes
Vegas: 11 votes
Niagra Falls: 1 vote
Reno/Tahoe: 4 votes
Cruise: 4 votes
Laughlin: 2 votes
Cantebury: 3 votes

So, basically, we’ve got a tie for first between New Orleans and Vegas. Joaquin suggested narrowing it down to just two so the two tied for first seem like the obvious choice. Cast your votes!

Vegas, baby.

2 StudioGlyphic June 16, 2005 at 11:23 pm

Vegas.

But I’ve always wanted to visit New Orleans just to party.

3 Maigrey June 16, 2005 at 6:53 pm

Oh, also, Nove 15- Jan 6th is the /easiest/ time for me to make it, since everything shuts down around then.

4 Maigrey June 16, 2005 at 6:52 pm

Vegas is my vote, if I have to choose one or the other.

Although I gotta say, I like ChrisHal’s idea for Trump :) Chicago’s not a bad place to have a partaaaaay and I have an in with the floor staff that they might spread a tournament for us. However, December is not the time for such a venture…

5 Dnasty13 June 16, 2005 at 6:26 pm

Vegas..

6 CJ June 16, 2005 at 12:48 pm

Hmmm… I’m not sure NO is out of the running yet. I would have a vehicle there as well… and October is doable.

Re: running our own game

It would be illegal in New Orleans if anyone were profiting off the game, even indirectly. And in a technical sense, the hotel would be doin that. If we ran it at someone’s home, or personal property, it would be legal no matter how many people we had as long as no one was taking a cut and we didn’t pay dealers.

Oh, and World Reknowned Professional Poker Player Chris Halverson… I’m working out… be afraid, be very afraid.

7 Jaxia June 16, 2005 at 10:24 am

Hmm. If it’s late Oct of this year, I say Vegas, since I’ll already be there :D Otherwise: NOLA all the way!

8 PokerProf June 16, 2005 at 8:11 am

*sighs* It looks like Vegas (yeah I was rooting for New Orleans) shoot me an e-mail if you need anything on the local sceen. :)

So.. should it be before of after December…

BTW Chris’ Idea for doing it ourselves is great; however, it’s illegal. You can’t run a game for cash without a license. This would be too large to be ingroned by the powers that be, I think.

9 Scott Chaffin June 15, 2005 at 11:50 pm

Gawd, that security code is toooooo loooooong.

Nawlins has more than one casino, folks. I’ll get a car that can hold five people at a minimum if we have to drive. Crikey, I’ll rent a freaking school bus. My personal official vote is for the Big Easy. Casual, easy-going, Southern charm, and the best food in America.

I’ll go to Vegas, but I’ll be double-damned if I stay in downtown Vegas again. Lamest Sin City experience EVER.

Definitely not December. I say October.

10 April June 15, 2005 at 10:33 pm

I’ll go wherever you lead, but my heart says Vegas. I second Mr. Halverson, NO DECEMBER DAMMIT!! I can reschedule a test, but not a final!!

11 Mike June 15, 2005 at 8:55 pm

Vegas.

Preferably quartly.

12 Chris Halverson June 15, 2005 at 8:05 pm

BadBlood: I’m bashing CJ, no way I’m going to argue with you and your guns ;-)

Here’s another idea: Gary, IN. We hit up the Trump boat! We can all get sick from handling the chips!

Vegas…

13 Joe Speaker June 15, 2005 at 6:55 pm

Vegas.

Whenever.

But soon.

14 alan June 15, 2005 at 5:10 pm

I’m perfectly willing to do either one. From a planning and chance that I’d actually be able to make it point of view (not because of cost, but time constraints), Vegas would be better for me.

But really, I’m open to anything.

15 Joaquin Ochoa June 15, 2005 at 4:10 pm

Ouch! I really wanted to do NO. But it looks like Vegas wins. I’m still casting my vote for NO in hopes that the tide will turn.

16 iggy June 15, 2005 at 3:34 pm

vegas vegas vegas.

17 G-Rob June 15, 2005 at 3:20 pm

You people are off your donkey. New Orleans wins without further discussion.

Vote = Over

18 BadBlood June 15, 2005 at 2:16 pm

Alright PPP(tm) Chris Halverson! Who you slammin’? Me or CJ??? ;)

19 Mr Subliminal June 15, 2005 at 2:03 pm

Las Vegas

20 Chad June 15, 2005 at 2:01 pm

NO sounds so tempting, but it pales in comparison to Vegas. Can I cast 5 votes? They’d all go to Vegas, that’s for sure.

21 Obie June 15, 2005 at 12:51 pm

Vegas Baby!

22 Chris Halverson June 15, 2005 at 11:16 am

We could use Tournament Director. I’ve used it in the past and it rocks. It does the seating assignments and reseating and everything. Yes, we would deal ourselves, that should be no problem. Plus it’s free.

23 Donkeypuncher June 15, 2005 at 11:07 am

Love the Vegas. Vegas loves me. I vote for Vegas.

If we do a conf room elsewhere, do we deal and move players from table to table ourselves?

24 Drizztdj June 15, 2005 at 11:01 am

Balkie says: I vant to go to Vehhhggggassss

25 Chris Halverson June 15, 2005 at 10:44 am

I agree w/ Scurvy, I’d play in a private room or something. Maybe we could get a conf room in a hotel for cheap if we have a lot of rooms or something. I’m not sure it’ll work well throughout hotel rooms/suites, but using a conf room would be good.

Personally, I don’t care if it’s cheap for anybody else. If we’re doing that then I am going to push hard for Minneapolis because it’d be free for me and screw the rest of you (except Drizz and Chad) :) . So basically saying “it’s cheaper for me” is a lame reason and should not be entered into the argument.

Maybe I should do some work and not keep replying here, then I could keep my job and afford to go wherever :)

26 BadBlood June 15, 2005 at 10:40 am

I’m up for either. Never been to NO, but it would save me some cash most likely on the flights.

Re: Poker tourney…I’d be happy to be the TD and set up the structure to be a bit better. That’s what I’m used to doing in G-Vegas anyway. I’m sure we would only need a banquet room w/tables and chairs reserved rather than someone’s poker room.

27 CJ June 15, 2005 at 9:25 am

Well… since I’m based in Louisiana, I could send out some feelers for a blogger conference and a private tourney at various NO-area casinos.

When it comes to time of year… the month of November is completely out for me. More specifically, Nov. 3-Dec. 1 (it’s TV news sweeps time). I suppose we could shoot for October, but that means getting started earlier.

I certainly don’t mind Vegas, and will never vote against it. But NO would be cheaper for me because I can drive.

28 Chris Halverson June 15, 2005 at 8:58 am

Oh, and I’m _perfectly_ OK w/ Vegas again.

29 ScurvyDog June 15, 2005 at 8:38 am

One thing I forgot to mention earlier regarding the actual blogger tournament (whatever the location) is that we might consider not even bothering with having it in a real live casino. Yeah, that’s cool and all, but we’ll likely face the same issue as at the Aladdin, as far as a structure designed to get us the hell out of the there as quickly as possible, not to mention juice and tips and what-not.

Speaking personally, I’d much more enjoy playing with cheap-ass plastic chips and Bicycle cards in a hotel suite(s), with people free to yell, drink, and smoke to their heart’s content. Everyone seemed pretty well-behaved and I can’t imagine any issues arising that people couldn’t work out.

30 Easycure June 15, 2005 at 8:32 am

Vegas!!!!!!

31 Chris Halverson June 15, 2005 at 8:27 am

Just remember, a vote for Catebury is a vote for Minneapolis! You cannot split them up! :)

I’m basically open for anything. I’ve never been to NO, so that’d be kinda cool. The Mrs may be interested in that too as long as it’s not during Mardi Gras. I’m not too hip on a cruise.

One thing though: Do NOT schedule it in December. Those of us with families just cannot make it from about mid-November until January. That pissed me off to no end last Dec.

The big question re: NO is can we get something “private” staged at a casino there? Is there more than one?

Most importantly: Do they have craps? ;-)

32 Human Head June 15, 2005 at 8:21 am

I second Spaceman, not a fan of Harrah’s at all. Vegas baby, Vegas :)

33 ScurvyDog June 15, 2005 at 7:50 am

Vegas gets my vote.

34 Mourn June 15, 2005 at 6:58 am

Vegas, baby. Veags.

35 BG June 15, 2005 at 5:44 am

Vehhhhhhhhgasssssss

36 Mike June 15, 2005 at 5:43 am

My vote is for NO…while Vegas is great, I think I could convince the wife to join me in NO a bit easier, as it wouldn’t be all poker, all the time….well…that would be the argument anyway, we all know better.

37 Jason June 15, 2005 at 3:43 am

All they’ve got in NO is Harrah’s, right? I hate Harrah’s. If that’s all there is, count me for Vegas.

38 Buffalo66 June 15, 2005 at 2:57 am

At least spell “Niagara” correctly, lol!

I’m down with Vegas, if my vote counts. I’ll bring the wing sauce.
