I recently read a few articles on how to capture good photos of lightning and have been hankering to get a chance. While it rains in Bangkok nearly every day or so proper thunderstorms are more rare. Last night was an exception. I was woken up around 4am by a loud racket outside my apartment. The thundering crashes were coming like artillery strikes.
Groggily I grabbed the trusty Canon DSLR and set up the tripod, configured up some test settings, and shot skyward. Unfortunately, most of the lightning was obscured by skyscrapers to the left and right of me so the only decent shot I had was to aim towards where several strikes seemed to occur in the direction of the Four Seasons Hotel and pray for the best.
Though I shot about 50 or 60 shots I only ended up with a scant few that were worthy of posting.
Nice learning experience. I have a better feel for the technique and settings I need to get some good shots so next time a loud crash and boom wakes me up I’ll grab some better pics.

Wicked Chops Blog Files

Hi, my name is Bill Rini and this is my poker blog. I've been blogging about poker and the poker industry since around 2003-ish. Like most people I started out playing poker as entertainment in home games whenever we wanted to sit around and smoke cigars, drink beer, and eat pizza, and needed a good excuse. I started playing online shortly after the first online card rooms opened and it wasn't long before I was playing 20, 30, or even 40 hours a week or more. One day I received a phone call about a program manager position at Tiltware which was the company that consulted to Full Tilt Poker on software development and marketing. After Tiltware I spent about 2.5 years working at Party Poker where I was the poker room manager.
