PokerStars Twitter FAIL

I read about PokerStars Twitter League but for the life of me I have clue whatsoever how this is related to Twitter other than they have a special Twitter account set up to post news and tournament results. Really?!?!? That’s it?

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve long been complaining how online poker sites have failed to fully embrace and utilize social media but calling something Twitter XXXXXX doesn’t make it social media. Why not just have the PokerStars Email Poker League and send out news and tournament results via email?

You can find the PokerStars Twitter League info here.

  1. They all want to get a piece of the Social Media pie…. look at Unibet, Bwin, William Hill etc… offering nothing but an own account.

Facebook and Twitter Accounts of PartyPoker are being run by affiliates (!)

  2. @Luke: That is the major problem with Twitter. Personally, I’ve found people’s Twitter habits to be highly insightful into how they are as a person. Many celebrity tweeters actually try to be relevant. They tweet things that are likely to be entertaining or informative. Some actually use the social networking aspect of it and ask for advice or invite people to interact with them. Others use Twitter in a way that shows how self-centered and self-absorbed they are by broadcasting their every thought (which is really scary when you read what they write).

  3. This is a mistake I think a lot of businesses make. Social media is a great way to promote your product. Not utilizing it fully will only hurt you.

  4. I enjoy twitter myself but second the fact that a lot of people over tweet. I can remember a couple of months ago I was following D.N. on twitter. He literally tweeted something like 10 or 15 times throughout the day about golf, which is a sport I love but come on. Needless to say I now no longer follow D.N. on twitter but still check his blog regularly.

As far as Pokerstars goes I wonder why they haven’t set up their own facebook, full tilt for that matter to. I’m not sure they need social media when they could potentially create their own avenues.

  5. Bill, I am already a member of the TiwtterPokerTour.com group. They have been in existence for over three years now. I am not sure what PS was thinking, but I am not sure that this is helpful to the game. The original #TPTPoker is a non-paid membership of poker players with similar interest and most of them can be found on twitter, just like yourself. In fact the group’s twtter name is @TPTPoker. As aways, I enjoy your articles and take on the game. BTW, keep safe over there.

  6. Well, the honest answer is, I don’t. Many people I subscribe to out of courtesy. Friends, industry people, etc. But I mostly read Twitter in TweetDeck and I have a column set up that filters only on the people/companies I actually care about enough to read. The fastest way to get kicked off that list is to start tweeting every 5 minutes about your life. I really don’t care about anybody in my family or amongst my friends to want to know that much about them 🙂

The downside is sometimes you run into some of these people and they ask if you read their tweet. I do the same thing I do when I don’t remember someone who says we’ve met before “Ahhh . . . I think I read that.” Other times I just put it to them bluntly, “Sorry, I really don’t read that many tweets. Some days I read everything. Some days I just don’t have the time. That must have been on one of my ‘not reading tweets’ days”

  7. I agree Bill. I try to give some updates out as to what’s going on throughout the day but some people way overuse it.

If I find a cool article – sure I’ll post it. If I’m working on a brand new project I might tweet that out.

If I bust out with three of a kind Aces, I’m going to post that in anger on my poker sites Twitter but hey – what can you do.

I have been unfollowing quite a few people lately who were literally telling their life story. “I’m brushing my teeth. Oh now I’m going downstairs. Now I’m looking in the fridge. Now I’m getting the milk.”

How do you even keep up with all of those??

  8. I like Twitter but too many people just tweet waaaaaay too much. I really don’t care what you’re thinking or eating every moment of the day.

On the other hand, it was an invaluable tool during the red shirt protests here in Bangkok. I just made a shortcut to a search for #redshirts on my iPhone and I could get a minute by minute update on skytrain and underground status, fighting, and any danger areas.

Too many people think of it like a status update on Facebook.

  9. I’m a big fan of Twitter and using it for business. I’m an internet marketer myself so I can see the value in Twitter but come on?

They could at least do something with the tournament besides just running a Twitter account for it.

Are they even making it so you have to have a Twitter account to join?
