Have you ever dreamed about shoving all-in against Phil Ivey with 27o? My therapist is trying to help me with that but, me too! And now I can find out what it might be like.

One of my old Full Tilt amigos, Ernest Hwang, sent me a message earlier this morning asking if I would like to check out an iPhone application he developed called Poker Tour Cam. What this ingenious little app does is take any photo on your iPhone and turn it into a television snapshot showing you up against your favorite pros.

Here’s me in Hua Hin throwing a move on Phil Ivey

I hope that's baht and not dollars

And here’s me getting my swerve on against Ivey

You call and it's all over, baby!

No need to actually get good at poker or invest in a tournament, you can be famous for the low, low price of $2.99 if you own an iPhone.

The setup is pretty cool. You can use an existing picture on your iPhone or take a snapshot of yourself and it automatically uses that photo. Once you have a picture you can input names for the players, what the actions are (To Call, All-in, Check, etc), pot amount, hole cards, and the board. You can even choose whether or not to have the TV line scans included in the photo.

Once you set up the options (or just use the defaults) you can save and/or email your piece of poker history.

I’ve become addicted to it and have started Ivey-izing all of my pics.

You can check it out in iTunes by typing in “Poker Tour Cam” or follow this link.

It’s well worth the $2.99. Much cheaper than buying into a tournament :-)

I guess the only question is why no poker rooms are coming up with cool little things like this?

Thanks for reading Bill's Poker Blog. You might want to check out his other sites:

First off, my apologies for not getting this post off yesterday. I sort of got caught up in coding mode on version 3.0 of Thailand Friends and couldn’t get into a writing mood.

Ahh, where to start? Hmmm, how about some (more) complaining about Feedburner? Since I last got my panties in a bunch I’ve watched my supposed subscribers go from about 1800 (which is about right) down to 900 then up to 5700 and now back down to 1400 and something. WTF?!? This is a Google company. How can the continue to produce such amazingly incorrect data?

And when you look on their status blog it hasn’t been updated in over a month despite several other blog publishers also expressing concern about their numbers being all over the place recently. For instance, Daily Blog Tips which has about 45,000 subscribers posted the other week about their numbers being all over the place too.

The best anybody can tell is that Google/Feedburner are adding and removing RSS feed aggregators. I’m sure that the intent is to give more accurate reporting but in the meantime it’s making their numbers more erratic than me at a poker table after a few beers.

Oh Feedburner, why have you forsaken us?

What else? Oh, I, thankfully, missed having to watch the US World Cup loss. That one was on too late for me (1:30am start time). But I did happen to catch England getting spanked by Germany. Good match.

With England and the US out of the running maybe numbers at some of the poker rooms will pick up. Now, if Germany would just lose that would free up most of the major markets. Sorry Germany. I’m cheering the poker rooms :-)

Dan over at Pokerati wrote up a piece on poker rooms getting licenses to offer poker in France which brings up an issue I might write about later. In fact, I’ve been hearing rumblings about this from more and more people in the poker industry but it’s not really hitting the poker mainstream quite yet.

The point being that with France and Italy both having closed off their poker markets and many of the pending legislation in the US aims to do something similar. For instance, in Italy you can play online poker but the poker room can only allow Italian players to play against other Italian players. I guess technically that’s not true. You don’t have to be an Italian citizen but you do have to be in Italy. So when a player logs into PartyPoker or another Italian licensed poker room they don’t see the Brits, Americans, French, or other players. They’re playing on a completely closed off system.

Well, the bill in California to legalize intrastate gambling would do pretty much the same for California. You could end up with 50 different US licensed poker rooms if this is the way things start to unfold for poker legislation.

That has some really interesting consequences.

Anything else? Oh, I don’t even know why I bother to read Gambling911 because it’s such a complete journalistic joke. I mean, if Wicked Chops had written the headline below I would have thought it was pretty funny. I dig their sense of humor. But this isn’t a joke.

“A Mexican, a Jew and a colored fellow walk into a bar… The bartender looks up and says… Get the f*** out of here.”

Some of you might recognize that as one of the many racist comments made by Clint Eastwood’s character in the film Grand Torino. It is also what Victory Poker pro player Dan Bilzeria tweeted and subsequently caused Joy Miller to lose her freakin’ mind.

According to Bilzeria, “Joy Miller read this and lost her mind… She told the CEO from victory poker that neither myself or any of the 20 sponsored pros would get any ESPN coverage until I gave a formal apology. I explained to her that it was a quote from a movie. She flipped out and started swearing and screaming at me about using the word colored. She sent me a bunch of angry texts, yelled at the CEO, and you can hear the voicemail she left swearing and yelling at me in the link below.”

Here is the link he references.

Now, first off, I think Bilzeria has a lot to learn about public relations if he’s going to be a public representative of a company. Second, I think Bilzeria demonstrates a shockingly ignorant understanding of the history of the NAACP which he later tries to use as justification for using the word “colored.”

In other words, I think the guy exercised some extremely poor judgment.

But Joy Miller has no right to threaten anybody. At best she should have taken the matter up with him personally, explained to him why it might be inappropriate, and moved on. She is not ESPN and according to Poker News Daily ESPN told them “She is not an employee of ESPN and, as such, does not speak for us in any capacity.”

So who is Joy Miller? Well, first off she’s the psycho who went ballistic when Terrence Chan posted on his blog how her decision to shortcut the end of a tournament for time reasons and allowing Annie Duke to openly coach one of his opponents during a hand cost him a prize.

She seems to be a rather unstable person with a mouth like a sailor and a habit of using the power of whatever position she has to threaten people who do things she doesn’t like or agree with.

Here’s some photos of Joy Miller when she isn’t acting outraged.

And though I hate to give this guy any exposure, I really had to point out the poor reporting that passes for journalism at Gambling911. Gambling911 covered this story and Jagajeet Chiba seems to get it all wrong. First off, he completely focuses on Bilzeria’s joke and says nothing about Joy Miller’s behavior. While I think what Bilzeria said was stupid, saying things like “Miller is the poker equivalent of Gretta van Sustern,” is beyond logic.

He also displays his ignorance of the topic in general when he says that the film Grand Torino “features a rape by young Hispanic gang bangers seeking revenge.” Uh, dude, they’re Hmong.

Who the f*ck proofreads over there?

I want to start off by saying that I am not bitter that I’m not in Las Vegas right now. Okay, a little disappointed that the Rini Inc. private jet doesn’t have enough fuel to get to Sin City but not bitter.

That being said, this time of year seems so contrived to me. You have about two months of journalists/bloggers, PR people, poker rooms, etc, all trying to make something out of what is usually nothing. Day after day everyone has to come up with some reason to make it seem as if something exciting is going on regardless of the lack of anything exciting actually going on.

Listen, I don’t want to take away anything from the winner of the $1000 WSOP Tiddlywinks bracelet but the vast majority of events during the WSOP are barely even newsworthy. Unless Phil Ivey or some other big name pro is at the final table (which in most events, they’re not) then for the vast majority of the poker world the event never even took place.

The biggest online poker rooms pay out a bigger prize every Sunday than some of the WSOP events. While I’m quick to give a congrats to winners, is anybody really impressed if you won the $1000 buy-in hold’em event? Will anybody remember your name the next day? Yet, nearly the entire poker journalism/blogging world is there covering every boring detail.

And don’t get me wrong . . . I know many of these bloggers/journalists quite well. I know they put in long hours, have pretty much thankless jobs, and put up with a lot of crap. I’ve had many private conversations with them where they’ve told me that after the first few weeks they can barely even muster up the creative juices to write. But they have to or they don’t get paid (or they get fired). And out of that need to write comes some rather predictable outcomes.

The Angle

The first, and most obvious outcome, is that they desperately try to find some interesting angle to write about. Even the most mundane factoids about players becomes the talk of the town. What, the winner collects coins? Yep. Wow, so even a coin collector can come to Las Vegas and win a WSOP bracelet. Isn’t that great, folks?

Copycats

The second predictable outcome is that the above mundane fact will become the focus of every journalist/blogger covering the WSOP. One journalist/blogger might have overheard the eventual winner talking about his coin collection at a dinner break the day before and then he tells one of his journalist/bogging buddies who is also looking for a reason why this event is of any interest to anybody other than the players and then he tells two friends and so on and so on and so on.

Writing About Writing About Poker

When all else fails journalists and bloggers can write about writing about the WSOP. They can write about their hotel rooms, running into other journalists/bloggers, what time they get home, whether they’re tired from partying the night before, or pretty much anything but poker. That’s fine if you run a personal blog but if you’re supposed to be writing poker news it’s not really what the readers signed up for.

Doing Anything to Get Attention

OMG, if I see one more talentless poker hack making a prop bet or trying to do something outlandish in order to get media attention I’m going to call Dr. Pauly and bet him I can’t stick 30 Twinkies up my nose in under 10 minutes. Just my own humble personal opinion but every effort should be made not to write about this kind of stuff. First of all, it presents poker players as sick, degenerate gamblers who will bet on anything. And secondly it only encourages other idiots.

The Year of the _______________

Every year all of the bloggers/journalists try to find a theme to sum up the entire WSOP. Year of the Woman, Year of the Europeans, Year of the Brits, Year of the Amateurs, Year of the Pros. Okay, we get it. You’ve worn this one out, guys.

Trying to Link Everything to Poker

This year the poker press has been trying to tie Joran van der Sloot (the guy who confessed to killing that woman in Peru and was a suspect in the Natalee Holloway murder) to poker. I’ve seen/read this story in all sorts of various non-poker media outlets and while some make a passing mention to him playing in a poker tournament in South America only the poker press is playing him up as a professional poker player. Why? Do you really want to keep associating people like that to a game already under intense scrutiny? Why associate ourselves with scumbags?

It’s good for maybe one mention. If you’re writing your fifth update on the van der Sloot case, you’re really reaching for something to write about. Gambling911, at this moment, has four spots on its homepage about the van der Sloot. What does that tell you?

Focus on Gadgetry / Technology

Last year all the talk was about smart phones and Twittering. Now, everybody is talking about the iPad. What will it mean for poker? Who’s got an iPad? What are pro players using their iPads for?

Better yet, who cares?

You can’t run poker software on them (maybe you can in the no-download version – depending on the site). You can’t use them at the table. They’re basically a really large enhanced iPhone.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love one myself and may end up getting one at some point but it has NOTHING to do with poker. Unless Daniel Negreanu or Andy Bloch are paid spokesmen for Apple do we really need multiple video segments on them using an iPad?

Conclusion??

The guys out there writing about the WSOP know I love them. Many are guys/girls I’ve had the pleasure of swapping chips with in Vegas or even in home games. My respect for what they do is not a question here.

But there is some sort of flaw in the system. When one looks at events like the Olympics or the World Cup which also span a considerable period of time you don’t see the same problems.

Maybe the WSOP has too many events. Maybe Harrah’s needs to handle reporting and sell access to the feed like AP or Reuters. I’m not close enough to the problem to know all of the root causes and best possible solutions but last year I wrote another post complaining about WSOP coverage and nothing has been improved. In fact, if some of my friends are to be believed, it’s gotten worse. As a consumer, I see it as worse.

When are we going to get better results?

Thanks for reading Bill's Poker Blog. You might want to check out his other sites:

Well, to my surprise, the US did not lose to England this weekend. I guess I should have been smoking vulture brains.

It looks like the WSOP is starting to get into full swing. Some bloggers/journalists are already running out of things to write about. :-)

It should be interesting how the WSOP and the World Cup come together. Although attendance at the WSOP seems to be pretty decent so far, the World Cup is such a huge sporting event that one has to imagine that many players skipped the WSOP (or at least parts of it) for a chance to cheer their teams in South Africa.

I think an interesting stat will be how player numbers fare at the online poker rooms during this period. Sure, we always get a bit of a dropoff for the WSOP but will be amplified by fans who may be out at their local pubs supporting their favorite teams?

This week was an insanely busy week for me. On my ThailandFriends website we pushed a relaunch out the door which not only meant the normal rush to make the launch date, firefighting all the glitches that we didn’t discover in testing, and complaints from members – some of whom have been on the site for 5 or 6 years – about what they like and don’t like, but we had scheduled a relaunch party for Saturday. And not just a little thing but a massive party on the rooftop pool with DJ, food, booze, and even some *ahem* hired coyote dancers.

So not only am I running around worry about the website but I’ve got to go buy 10 cases of this and a case of whiskey and yadda, yadda, yadda.

Anyway, here are some pics from the party:

As you might be able to gather, our new slogan is “Are You On?” The t-shirts actually seem to be pretty popular. I had about 50 made to hand out at the party and such but I’ve worn mine several times before the event and I constantly have people asking “On what?” and then I show them the back with says ThailandFriends.com.

The event ended just as the last pool party we had at this venue, with most people getting wet whether they liked it or not. This was one particularly devious pool tossing.

Sorry for the quality. I’m no Spielberg. Plus we just had the ambient light to work with.

I had drinks Sunday night with a former Full Tilter in town for a short holiday. Just his luck he got in around 1am on Sat night which means he missed my party and Sunday was a Buddhist holiday which meant that no bars were allowed to open (restaurants could serve booze but unless you had a restaurant license you had to close) so he got a very limited view of what Bangkok nightlife is all about.

I was able to get around to actually posting something on this site though.

The Sky is Falling for Affiliates

If you missed it, give the “The Sky is Falling for Affiliates” a read. It’s been retweeted a few times and I’ve received quite a bit of private emails from affiliate managers and affiliates making comments about what I’ve written. I would say that generally, many people, as much as they hate to, agree with the overall message. Nobody is happy about it but they realize that the poker affiliate model is changing.

Poker Job Search

I know this may seem like a bit of a joke after the affiliates post on this site but there is a Poker Affiliate Manager position being advertised out there. If you speak Dutch, someone is looking for a Dutch Affiliate Manager. Last but not least, someone is looking for an Online Community Manager to work out of Gibraltar.

And if you don’t have a rakeback account on Full Tilt Poker yet, you better get cracking. Check out Rakeback Report for information on getting 27% rakeback on Full Tilt before they cut the affiliate payouts.

Bluff Magazine recently announced their Power 20 of poker and I’ve seen several people comment here and there about who should or should not have been on the list. Before I give my views, here’s the list:

1. PokerStars
2. Full Tilt Poker
3. Mitch Garber
4. Howard Lederer
5. Ty Stewart
6. Doyle Brunson
7. Joe Cada
8. Barney Frank
9. Tony G
10. Daniel Negreanu
11. Phil Ivey
12. John Pappas
13. Mike Sexton
14. Mori Eskandani
15. Brian Balsbaugh
16. Lance Bradley
17. Joe Sebok
18. Barry Shulman
19. Matt Savage
20. Per Hagen

I think if Bluff is going to recognize entities like PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker then I’m not really sure on some of the other logic. Is Mitch Garber #3 because he’s Mitch Garber or is he #3 because he is essentially in charge of the WSOP at the moment? If it’s the later then shouldn’t the WSOP be #3 instead of the man?

Now, don’t get me wrong, I used to work for Mitch and he’s a very bright and intelligent guy and very capable of leading the WSOP but my question goes more to whether he would be on the list if he would have taken another job. If he was running another poker room would he be #3? Personally, I don’t think he would be. I don’t find that to be a reflection on Mitch but more on how these rating things tend to skew results towards organizations than individuals even though they honor the individual who is at the top of the organization.

Which makes it equally confusing as to why they left off Ray Bitar (CEO Full Tilt Poker) or Isai Scheinberg (founder PokerStars). If you’re going to name Full Tilt and PokerStars as the top two in your Power 20 then how do the driving forces behind them not even get a mention?

And what about Bluff’s Editor in Chief, Lance Bradley, being on the list? Is Lance Bradley that influential or is Bluff? I’m not taking a stab at Lance as I don’t even know the guy. I’m simply asking why name a person in one instance and an entire company in another?

I’m also not really a fan of picking the current WSOP ME winner as a shoe-in for the list. Joe Cada is probably a really cool guy but this time next year will he make the list after a new WSOP champion has been crowned? If not, what is he doing on the list? Why not just list it as “Current WSOP ME Champion”? Shouldn’t the list reflect lifetime contribution to the industry rather than who’s the flavor of the week? I mean that in no disrespect to Cada but let’s face it, the press is fickle and the spot on the Power 20 goes to the current WSOP ME champion and not to the actual individual human being.

Overall putting together these types of lists is difficult. Mostly because it’s subjective. On top of that Bluff claims “Each year BLUFF Magazine seeks the opinion and input of the poker industry in hopes of putting together a comprehensive list for our readers of the most influential and powerful people in the poker industry” which sounds good on paper but if you ask a group of people who all have a certain view on the industry your list is going to be biased towards that view.

For instance, the list seems to be somewhat over-represented with agents and media people. Considering the billions of dollars made throughout the industry do they really represent that much influence? Or is it that a magazine publisher would need to deal with agents in order to get exclusive interviews so these people seem much more influential than they might be to the industry as a whole.

I really don’t know and I’m not accusing anyone of anything other than being subjective which leaves room for others to question how the list was put together. You can’t really argue with lists like Fortune 500 or Forbes Richest lists because they’re objective. Forbes may love me but that still doesn’t mean I can get a spot on their rich list.

Anyway, enough with that malarky, on with the week(s) that was . . .

When I originally watched the video of Michelle Tiffany and Neil Cavuto I was having a lot of problems with the video. I don’t know if that was my internet or something at Fox but I thought I would transcribe the best I could the interview for anyone else who might be having video problems.

I wanted to punch myself in the face after having to listen to every single word that was spoken but I did it for you guys because I love you :-)

Neil Cavuto: Well be careful pushing a bad hand just because you push it more doesn’t make it any less bad. Take it from a real gambler so we thought tonight we would get you one and indeed we did. With us now is Tiffany Michelle. Tiffany is a professional black jack and poker player. Is that true Tiffany? So you know what you’re doing when it comes to gambling?

Tiffany Michelle: That’s what they tell me.

Neil Cavuto: Well, alright. Good for you. So Tiffany, I’m going to rely on your expertise as a gambler extraordinaire. Taking a look at what the president is doing. A good gambler is someone who bets a lot, understands or thinks that he or she has a good hand. Am I right?

Tiffany Michelle: Yeah, generally you have a good hand where you know if you have a bad hand how to maneuver with that hand and take advantage of your opponent’s weaknesses. So sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad and you have to work with the best angle to push that bad hand.

Neil Cavuto: Alright, the president is fairly or not ,Tiffany, is viewed to have a bad hand right now because prior cards he’s dealt have turned out to be, you know, threes and fours. They haven’t really worked out. Yet he continues playing the same hand. What is the strategy behind that? I mean, if I were looking at you, and let’s say you had a couple of bad hands and you continue to play, I’m thinking you must be holding some good cards, right?

Tiffany Michelle: Yeah. LAUGHS Well, not only did Barak Obama in his first year in office decided to tackle one of the toughest issues in US politics. You know, Hillary Clinton tried when she was the first lady. It would be like me approaching Phil Hellmuth on my first day of my poker game and saying “Hey Phil Hellmuth you have eleven bracelets. I want to challenge you heads-up.” So it’s a tough situation to be in. And what tends to happen when you consistently lose hands. I mean, talk about Scott Brown. That was a really bad beat for Barak Obama and the Democrats who really thought they had the chip lead there. They thought they had a lock on this tournament and with that bad beat that tables have turned, the momentum is changing. And what often happens for some players you continue to push the issues. You continue to play the bad hands. You continue to get into sticky situations. And what really needs to happen is you need to step away from the table. You need to clear your head. All the good poker players are going to do that. They’re going to step away after . . .

CAVUTO BEGINS SPEAKING OVER TIFFANY

Neil Cavuto: The only thing I can read into it Tiffany, and you know this part better than I, that’s why I have you here. For your insight. While that maybe he sees something we don’t. Or maybe he senses something that we don’t. Or maybe he’s got other cards up his sleeve or in front of him that we don’t. What do you make of that?

Tiffany Michelle: Maybe that’s a lot of maybes and we all really hope that’s the case but the only situation. If you continue these issues when you are in such a bad situation. When you have lost so much power, you have suffered so many beats is to step away and rethink your plan. I think the problem at this point is there doesn’t appear to be any rethinking. There doesn’t appear to be any reevaluation of the initial strong strategy you had when you came into this tournament shall we say. All you’re doing is continuing to push the issues and essentially losing the respect of your peers around you and the players around you. They’re catching you weak and that’s not looking good on your part. That’s not gonna help you win a tournament. Here we are, let’s say deep in the World Series, close to the bubble, you can taste that final table money and it’s not looking like it’s gonna happen.

Neil Cavuto: Alright but in black jack terms, he’s doubling down, right? I mean, I know there you’re essentially betting against the house. But you’re so convinced that you’ve got a winner that the last card up your sleeve, and I know I’m mixing gambling metaphors here, is bad. And you’re going to run with it, right? So that makes me think or everyone else says kinda what you’re saying, hey, hey, you’ve had a series of bad hands, you’re not looking good, you’re looking kind of ridiculous. Leave the table, you know, go get something to eat or drink, or both, which I normally do, and then maybe come back. And he’s not. So what do you read into that?

Tiffany Michelle: I mean, what do you do? I think it’s really hard in that situation. And even as a good poker player it’s hard in that moment to have the diligence and to have the consistency to sit there and know when it’s time to stop or know when it’s time to let up. I mean, what I think is probably going to end up happening, is like, I said, for a poker term you say doubling down, I say bubbling a tournament, you’re going to get close. Health care reform, this has been going on for close to a year. We’re really deep into this.

Neil Cavuto: Yeah, you’re right.

Tiffany Michelle: But essentially if something is finally passed and if something finally goes through at this point it’s not looking like the American public is going to be happy. And it’s looking like it’s probably going to cost a lot of money. And that’s really not a win-win situation.

Neil Cavuto: You know that is very well expressed. And the difference, I guess, obviously, when you play you play with your own money. This guy is playing with our’s. That’s another difference. Michelle, very interesting. I learned quite a bit. Remind me not to gamble against you. Thank you Tiffany, very much.

I started to write a very similar post to this when Tiffany Michelle and Maria Ho were on the Amazing Race. During that same week they were running episodes of Celebrity Apprentice and had just watched several episodes of Annie Duke trying to relate even the most routine points into a poker analogy. Tiffany and Maria sort of put me on tilt watching them trying to do the same thing when it was so obviously unnecessary.

My all-time tilt moment came when Annie was telling the board that in poker you have to make good decisions. WTF?!?! In real life you don’t need to make good decisions? Good decisions are a unique poker concept? Why did she feel the need to make a comparison between business and poker when making good decisions is universal across all areas of your life?

I’m not sure how I recovered from that tilt but I didn’t write the post. I thought maybe I was being too harsh. Maybe too critical.

But this interview between Neil Cavuto and Michelle re-tilted me. I’m don’t think I’m being too critical when I say . . . NOT EVERYTHING SHOULD BE MADE INTO A POKER METAPHOR!!!!!!

I mean, the interview became way more complicated than it needed to because both of them were trying to shoehorn the healthcare debate bill into poker metaphors that didn’t quite fit. What a painful thing to watch.

BTW, I can’t remember if I saw this on Pokerati or WickedChops first so I’ll just throw out a prop to both.
